As registered Massage therapists we have a virtual arsenal of manual techniques. Every therapist assesses each individual client in order to determine which combination of modalities to use in order to treat the condition that presents. Here is a list and a brief description of many of the common modalities used at Integral Balance.
Trigger Point Release — Addresses localized areas of myofascial dysfunction, often referred to as “muscle knots”. However, Trigger Points can occur in any tissue including muscle, tendon, ligament and fascia. Trigger Points can cause a variety of symptoms from headaches and nausea to cramping and nerve pain; depending on where they are in the body. Stimulation to these points allows the neuromuscular system to reflexively elongate contracted connective tissue, and locally stimulate circulation, bringing relief to many painful conditions.
Pregnancy Massage — is calming for the mother to be, while helping the body to adjust to the physical strains of expecting. Massage brings relief to the lower back, neck, hips, and legs by enhancing the pliability of connective tissues and strained muscles. Swelling is reduced by increasing blood and lymphatic circulation, bringing relief to edema and carpal tunnel symptoms. Massage therapy has been proven to ease labor pain, and improve labour outcomes.
Deep Tissue Massage — addresses the layers of connective tissue within the body to relax, lengthen, and release holding patterns effectively and efficiently. It is used for the alleviation of pain, improving posture, flexibility, and fluid movement patterns.
Sports Massage — may be used before, during, and after an athletic event. A stimulating pre-event treatment enhances proprioception, increases circulation, and softens muscle tension, to prepare the athlete physically and mentally for optimum performance. Sports massage brings relief to tensions that build up during physical activities. While muscular tension, minor injuries, and soft tissue lesions can accumulate between training sessions, sports massage helps to remedy minor complaints before they get in the way of performance. Muscle soreness, fatigue, and swelling is massaged away, improving recovery time between training sessions.
Relaxation Massage — is a variation of the more gentle Swedish Massage techniques designed to soothe and ease tension from the body and the mind. This is a great introduction to the benefits of massage therapy.
Swedish Massage — includes a whole variety of manual techniques designed to mobilize tissue, release tension and increase circulation. Swedish Massage is typically used in conjunction with any number of other modalities and is often used as a transition technique.
Muscle Energy — is a neuromuscular technique that utilizes the neurological communication between various muscles and muscle groups to help restore joint movement and muscle balance. This technique is especially effective for spine and sacral injuries.
Lymphatic Drainage — consists of series of very gentle tissue manipulations designed to increase the Lymphatic circulation and decrease edema (swelling). Lymphatic Drainage Massage is excellent for recent injuries, detoxification and pain management with chronic inflammatory disorders.
Myofascial Release — Includes a wide variety techniques from very subtle, gentle techniques that allow access to the deepest layer of tissue, to more aggressive superficial techniques. The fascial system plays an Integral role in the body on every level. It creates dynamic strength in the body through internal tension patterns that support every posture or action the body goes through. Fascia also creates the intracellular channels that allow for all cellular exchange to happen. In order to create any lasting change in the body or tissue whether it be muscle joint or organ, the fascial system needs to be addressed directly. Although most techniques have a fascial component, it takes a high degree of skill to be able to assess and treat the system independently and consciously.
Joint Mobilizations — Refers to specific movements applied to the actual joint and joint capsule in order to encourage the small passive motions between joint surfaces. These motions must be present in a joint for full, pain-free range of motion to occur. There are many different levels of manipulation or grades of joint mobilizations that can be used depending on the dysfunction present
Intraoral work — Includes a variety of neuromuscular and fascial techniques including some craniosacral techniques. Frequently used to treat Temporalmandibular joint dysfunction or TMJD by releasing the mechanics of the jaw and surrounding tissues. Intraoral work is indicated for many conditions including headaches and migraines, transient spinal pain and spinal injury, clenching and grinding as well as postural dysfunction.
Breast Massage — excellent for decreasing lymphatic stagnation responsible for many fibrotic and painful breast conditions. Also extremely beneficial for maintaining and increasing range of motion post mastectomy and for decreasing scar tissue in the surrounding area.
CrainioSacral Therapy — Profound light touch used to release tension and restore balance and function to the central nervous system directly and the entire body reflexively, allowing the body to self correct. Effective for all ages, this technique has shown profound results in people with chronic and or severe injuries.
